‘Grandisimo’ Observation Wheel Project Wins Green Light in St. Paul Square Historic District

San Antonio's skyline set to transform with new 213-foot observation wheel

San Antonio's downtown is poised for a significant transformation as the Historic and Design Review Commission has granted conceptual approval for the 'Grandisimo' observation wheel project in the St. Paul Square Historic District.

Developed by Icon Experiences, the 213-foot-tall observation wheel will be situated on a parking lot near Hoefgen Street, adjacent to the Robert Thompson Transit Station. This strategic location offers riders panoramic views of the Alamodome, the Tower of the Americas, and the expansive cityscape beyond.

Beyond the observation wheel, the project encompasses a family-friendly event plaza featuring a carousel, a miniature golf course, covered seating areas, concession stands, and restroom facilities. The design aims to revitalize the currently vacant lot into a vibrant community gathering spot, with landscaping and signage thoughtfully integrated to complement the historic charm of St. Paul Square.

Land-use attorney James McKnight, representing the developers, emphasized that the commission's approval marks the initial phase. Detailed plans concerning materials, lighting, and pedestrian amenities will be submitted subsequently. Commission members lauded the project's potential to activate underutilized space but stressed the importance of maintaining architectural integrity and respecting the neighborhood's character.

The site, owned by a limited-liability company associated with a regional hotel operator, is set to transition from an asphalt lot to a dynamic entertainment destination. If all approvals proceed as scheduled, construction could commence later this year, introducing a new focal point of recreation and tourism to the heart of San Antonio's heritage district.

For more information and updates on the 'Grandisimo' project, residents and visitors are encouraged to stay tuned as San Antonio's skyline prepares to welcome this exciting addition.
